MyMobileLyfe survey: Smartphone tasks

Smartphone owners use their devices to place and receive calls. And a lot of other tasks.

The results of a recent Gallup poll shows that mobile technology, particularly the use of smartphones and tablets, has affected many aspects of Americans’ lives, but most notably their communication with friends and family.

A majority of Americans say mobile technology has greatly increased their interpersonal communication. Two-thirds of U.S. workers say they are now working at least a little more outside of working hours as a result of mobile technology.

We wanted to know what people were doing with their smartphones. My Mobile Lyfe asked 97 adults 18 and up in a survey which tasks they performed on a regular basis — several times a month — with their devices. What we found users do goes beyond the call.

The survey shows that 72 percent of smartphone owners use social media on a regular basis using their devices. On a regular basis, 64 percent consume news, 61 percent listen to music, 56 percent manage their finances, 42 percent play games, and 39 percent shop for products and services.

Smartphone owners want to be connected to others; they want to be informed; they want to be entertained; and they want to be organized and productive. If your content reflects these desires, then your brand will be more likely to reach new customers.
