Mobile app usage hits new high

Time spent by users on mobile devices is at an all-time high, and one of the biggest drivers of this is the mobile app, a new study reveals.

ComScore’s latest mobile app report looked at about 10 billion minutes of user engagement on apps during the month of May. Smartphones and tablets accounted for 60 percent of time spent on digital media, up from 50 percent a year ago.

Users spent more time on mobile apps as well, according to ComScore, accounting for 51 percent of all media time spent in May.

These numbers are helpful when coming up with a mobile strategy for your business. The percentage of users active on mobile platforms continues to grow, providing more opportunities for businesses seeking to promote their brand to an audience increasingly on the move.

Photos, for example, is a content category that has shifted almost exclusively to mobile. The category, led by apps like Instagram and Flickr, represents 96 percent of content activity from mobile devices, placing it a close second to digital radio.

Social media networking also shows a huge shift to mobile devices. It generates more than 70 percent of its engagement activity on mobile, and total mobile engagement has grown 55 percent in the past year.
